Why futurists should listen to Donald Fagen’s “I.G.Y.” from his 1982 album “The Nightfly.” The lyrics will make you ask yourself if some of the things we deem possible are not simply optimistic dreams. Most of them may be but Fagen mentions something we must be cautious of while we develop technology for the greater social good. Just because we can create the technology that we think should be used in a good manner, will it? Many monopolistic multi-nationals simply want technology to make more money at the expense of the planet. Only until we can figure out how to use technology for the greater good will we live by the following statement: “What a beautiful world this will be, what a glorious time to be free…”
